Hey list,
When I started at this job, my boss thought he was being frugal by
buying refurbished hardware without a warranty. I warned him. :)
Now that some of the hardware is crapping out, he wants me to send
it out to somebody who can tell us exactly what part is failing, how
much it would cost to fix, and whether or not it's worth fixing.
We have somebody like this who does Mac repairs. Up until now, I
have performed all PC maintenance in-house, unless the system was
under manufacturer warranty. Trouble is, my boss does not like my
opinion about the refurbished systems. He wants a second opinion.
I've stopped short of just opening the Yellow Pages and farming out
this work to a teenager making $7 an hour, because I'd rather give
the work to somebody cool who could use a little extra income in
exchange for giving some vintage-2005 systems the hairy eyeball.
I understand that this sort of work is beneath your dignity (after
all, it is beneath mine!) Nonetheless, it would be really easy work.
Just tell us exactly what's broken, how much you would charge to fix
it, and whether in your opinion it is worth fixing. If the answer is
"no," then let us know whether it's worth cannibalizing for spare
parts. My boss will give you money -- admittedly not much, but some.
Interested? Not interested, but know someone who would be?
Want to use my company's old hardware to jumpstart a class in
PC Hardware Repair for AS220's Broad Street Studio youth?

P.S. I'll try to make it to the Hackintosh presentation tonight.
