So, Brian Jepson and I have been having a side conversation about DIY
laser cutters that started with this instructable:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Laser-cutter-start-slicing-stuff-for-
under-50-dol/
His design is kind of ghetto, but it's a start and he found a cheap
laser.
Then I saw this one shortly afterwards:
http://www.instructables.com/id/3-Axis-CNC-Router---60x60x5---
JunkBot/?ALLSTEPS
Which is awfully big, but more polished and could totally be done
with scavenged metal. Since we'd be making a laser cutter, we
wouldn't have to worry about Z-axis control, just switching the laser
on and off.
Brian and I think it would be a blast to make one of these, but on a
smaller scale (like 11x17" or 24x24") with some of the Broad Street
Studio youth. We could work as mentors and help them through the
mechanical and electronics build process. It would be a great piece
of community outreach for the group and a hell of a lot of fun.
I'm guessing that we need 2-3 people who can *solidly commit* to one
to two evenings a week (or maybe a saturday afternoon) for a couple
of months to do this. That's a total shot in the dark for the time
estimate, but it feels about right. We haven't brought this up with
the BSS folks yet, as I wanted to gauge interest first.
So, who's up to built a cool ass laser cutter for cheap and infect
some teenagers with the technology bug?
